Step-by-Step Guide

How to Start CFA in India — 2026 Complete Guide

From zero to registered CFA candidate in 6 steps. Registration, exam windows, study material, exam day process and how to receive the Charter.

6 Steps to Become a CFA Charterholder

1
Check your eligibility
You need: a Bachelor's degree (any stream) OR be in your final year OR have 4,000 hours professional experience. No GMAT, no entrance test, no specific stream required. Engineers, BCom, BA, BSc — all eligible.
2
Register at cfainstitute.org
Go to cfainstitute.org → Create an account → Pay the one-time enrollment fee ($350 ≈ ₹29,000) — this is only for Level I, first time. Then pay the exam registration fee (early: $940 ≈ ₹78,500; standard: $1,250 ≈ ₹1,04,000).
3
Choose your Level I exam window
Level I runs 4 times per year: February, May, August, November. Choose a window 4–6 months out to give yourself adequate study time. Early registration (6+ months out) saves ~₹25,000.
4
Study using official curriculum or prep notes
CFA Institute provides a Learning Ecosystem — digital curriculum included in your fee. Many candidates also use Kaplan Schweser (₹25–35K/level) or Bloomberg Exam Prep. Plan 300–320 hours of study for Level I.
5
Appear for the computer-based exam
Level I is 180 MCQs in two 135-minute sessions with a break. Computer-based at Prometric test centres in Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Pune, Kolkata, Ahmedabad. Results in ~60 days via email.
6
Pass L2, L3 then apply for Charter
After passing all 3 levels: submit 4,000 hours of relevant professional experience (full-time finance/investment roles — can be accumulated before, during or after exams), get 2–3 professional references, apply to CFA Institute. Charter typically awarded within 90 days.

India-specific study tips
  • 📱 Use lunch break: 45 mins daily during work = 150 hours/year
  • 🌅 Early mornings: Most Indian CFA passers study 5–7 AM before work
  • 📚 Schweser vs Official: Official = comprehensive; Schweser = efficient. Use both.
  • 🧪 Mock exams are non-negotiable: Do minimum 3 full mocks before exam day
  • ⚖️ Ethics = free marks: Ethics is 15–20% of L1 — never skip it
  • 📊 FSA + Ethics = 35%: Master these two topics first for maximum score uplift
