CFA Level I — Overview
CFA Level I is the first and most widely-taken level of the CFA exam. It tests broad knowledge of 10 topic areas — the emphasis is on understanding concepts rather than applying them (that comes in Level II). It is conducted 4 times a year in India.
Format: 180 MCQs across two 135-minute sessions (360 minutes total, with a break in between). Computer-based at Prometric centres. Each question has 3 answer choices.

6-Month Study Plan for CFA Level I
- Month 1–2: Quantitative Methods + Economics. Get the maths foundation correct first. Complete all EOC (end-of-chapter) questions.
- Month 2–3: Financial Statement Analysis — the hardest and heaviest topic. Dedicate the most time here. Income statement, balance sheet, cash flows, ratio analysis.
- Month 3–4: Equity Investments + Fixed Income. Memorise valuation formulas, practice DDM and bond pricing daily.
- Month 4–5: Derivatives, Alternatives, Portfolio Management, Corporate Issuers. These are lighter — don't over-invest time.
- Month 5: Ethics — dedicate 2 full weeks. 15–20% weight and the most learnable topic. Read the Standards of Practice Handbook in full.
- Final 4 weeks: 3+ full mock exams (timed, 180 questions). Review only weak areas. No new topics.
Pass Rate & Difficulty
The global CFA Level I pass rate is approximately 39–44% (2024–2025 data). This means roughly 60% of candidates fail — not because the material is impossible, but because many are underprepared. Indian candidates with finance backgrounds typically clear in the 45–55% range.
The most common failure reasons: insufficient study hours, skipping Ethics, poor exam day time management, and not doing mock exams under timed conditions.
Top Strategy Tips for Indian Candidates

- Timing: 180 questions in 270 minutes = 1.5 min/question. Practice timing from Day 1.
- Most Indian candidates study 1.5–2 hours/day before or after work for 5 months
