CFA Level I Syllabus & Study Plan India 2026

CFA Level I — Overview

CFA Level I is the first and most widely-taken level of the CFA exam. It tests broad knowledge of 10 topic areas — the emphasis is on understanding concepts rather than applying them (that comes in Level II). It is conducted 4 times a year in India.

Format: 180 MCQs across two 135-minute sessions (360 minutes total, with a break in between). Computer-based at Prometric centres. Each question has 3 answer choices.

Pass Rate & Difficulty

The global CFA Level I pass rate is approximately 39–44% (2024–2025 data). This means roughly 60% of candidates fail — not because the material is impossible, but because many are underprepared. Indian candidates with finance backgrounds typically clear in the 45–55% range.

The most common failure reasons: insufficient study hours, skipping Ethics, poor exam day time management, and not doing mock exams under timed conditions.
