Can engineering graduates do CFA in India?

Yes — absolutely. In fact, engineers are among the most successful CFA candidates in India. Engineering graduates often have stronger quantitative foundations (Quant Methods, Fixed Income, Derivatives) than commerce graduates. The only area where engineers need extra effort is Financial Statement Analysis (FSA) — accounting-heavy topics that are not part of engineering curricula.

Many of India's top portfolio managers and quantitative analysts at AMCs and FinTech firms have engineering backgrounds combined with CFA credentials.

Work experience requirement — for the Charter (not for exams)

This is a common source of confusion: you do NOT need work experience to appear for any CFA exam level. Work experience is only required to receive the actual CFA Charter after passing all 3 levels.

To receive the Charter, you need: 4,000 hours of relevant professional experience in roles directly related to investment decision-making or producing work that informs investment decisions. This can be accumulated before, during, or after your CFA exams — so students who start in final year can accumulate experience concurrently while clearing the 3 levels.

What counts as "relevant experience" for the Charter?

CFA Institute accepts a broad range of roles. Eligible experience includes:

Roles that typically do not count: pure accounting, audit, tax compliance, back-office operations, data entry, or HR/admin at financial firms.
